I think it's the fluorescent dye in these "Hot" chips, Steve. It is energized by the lamp in your scanner and comes across as a very bright image, overwhelming the sensor in the moving bar. I don't know of any good solution to the problem. You can sometimes select just that chip in your graphics program and adjust the hue and saturation till it looks closer to 'right', but the result never looks like the actual chip.
