I made a quick trip to Reno today to visit the Flamingo one last time before it closes Tuesday. What an eerie experience this was; although the hotel was still open, the casino apparently has been closed for a few days. It was like walking through a cemetery (OK, a cemetery with craps tables and slot machines). The felt was off many of the tables, the slot machines were turned off, and there looked to be maybe 10 people in the whole place.
There is supposed to be a new themed casino going in the Flamingo's location in 6-8 months. But without an on-site parking facility and given the current state of the economy, you have to wonder if it has a shot to succeed.
Reno has seen a lot of casinos go under in the last few years (Harolds Club, Nevada Club, Riverboat, Pioneer Inn, Comstock, Speakeasy). Any guesses as to which one is next? My vote is for the Sundowner.
