I took a look at Mapquest and mapped it out and it looks like you have two options. You can head south in Nevada and hit Tahoe before crossing over to California.

Or what Mapquest suggests is that you cross over and take 89 to 99 south. This way you go through Sacramento and other CA towns. A lot of these towns have nice little card rooms that you can pick up some nice chips from - and they are on your route.
