Although it hasn't happened in awhile Ebay was in the past plaqued with outages . . . not actually power outages but the servers would be offline.

Ebay's policy only extended auctions in limited circumstances and many people believed that when there was an outage and there auction was not extended (or even if it was extended) that they did not get as much as possible from the auction. They were usually correct.
