Unfortunately, words may have generic interpretations. I agree, how many times have we seen a chip called a token and a token called a chip? Many times.
Most people who don't collect chips and token who sell at do it all the time. For example...
http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?MfcISAPICommand=ViewItem&item=1181303319
With this said, I still believe that there are people who would use the exact terminology to subterfuge, what is said.
Chip is a specific item and a token is another. God forbid anyone going over to the coin collectors message board http://www.coinclub.com/wwwboard/wwwboard.html and dropping a message about a casino token and calling it a coin or calling a cent a penny, those vultures there will drop down all over them.
This is a similar problem I had when the current "Silver Strikes" (Silver Premium Tokens as I prefer to call them) first came out and I started collecting them. I would go from dealer to dealer at the convention and say I collect silver strikes and I would be immediately shown the "Silver Strikes" of the sterling and pure silver token varieties like this one here.
I would then have to let the dealer know exactly what I meant.
Even now I see that some are attributing the word "strike" more generically. A recent post to The Strike Point, the poster referred to a token as "Riviera Valentine Strike" and was told by another person, "it should not be referred to as a Silver Strike." (Silver Strike wasn't used just Strike) I would concur that any coin or token could be referred to as a "strike" as that's how they are made.
I realize that the PLEDGE was created a while back and that it CANNOT and shouldn't have any word changes made now as it would affect too many people. I only wish that "I" who was there in the beginning had said something early on. However, as I collect chips and tokens, the situation as I see it now didn't even enter my mind.
I wonder how many times here someone has posted a message about a chip or token to be told by another collector that it is either a token or a chip?
Asking people to sign the Pledge or join the SlabFree Chapter who don't collect chips will be an easy or difficult task, as some my say I don't collect chips so why should I take the Pledge or join the Chapter? Others may be willing to take the pledge and join the chapter in an attempt to keep the slabbing companies from thinking about moving into their specific area of the hobby. However, I do believe that as the slabbing companies are only interested in one thing MONEY! And that while they have seen all of the fervor over slabbing casino chips, they might be thinking well those are the chip collectors, and we don't see any collectors of tokens taking a stand, after all the pledge and SlabFree Chapter refer ONLY to chips.
Now here's their chance to get their foot inside the back door. Let's do tokens and if they become acceptable maybe the move back into chips will be more acceptable.
Next for the dealer's, most believe in contracts and wording must be specific not generic. When a slabfree dealer might accept the SlabFree statement
"Neither I or anyone else associated with my Chip Dealing activities will sell or advertise for sale slabbed chips or otherwise participate in the slabbing of casino chips."
in order to become a SlabFree dealer, I do believe there could be problems if this dealer being a SlabFree dealer of casino chips becomes a dealer of Slabbed Casino Tokens.
I do believe this statement MUST be changed. To what? I had preferred the wording...
"Neither I or anyone else associated with my Chip and Token Dealing activities will sell or advertise for sale slabbed chips and tokens or otherwise participate in the slabbing of casino chips and tokens."
Actually, I now prefer this statement...
"Neither I or anyone else associated with my Casino Collectibles Dealing activities will sell or advertise for sale slabbed Casino Collectibles or otherwise participate in the slabbing of Casino Collectibles which are on the Casino Collectibles list maintained by the SlabFree Chapter of The Casino Chips and Gaming Tokens Collectors Club."
The SlabFree Chapter could compile a LIST of Casino Collectibles items. This would include anything that could be thought of and I'll miss some here.
Casino Chips, Casino Tokens (generically includes silver strikes and NON Gaming approved tokens), Casino Slot Cards, Casino Door Keys, Casino Dice, Casino Playing Cards... and the list goes on.
Slabbing companies will slab ANYTHING! So we need to be UNITED in the SLAB FREE cause. I do believe that the SlabFree Chapter should look at the wording that exists within all literature and make it less specific and more generic *bg* in relation to Casino Collectibles.
I wonder how many other collectors who are out there that do not collect casino chips and tokens that collect casino dice, casino slot cards or casino door keys, etc., who haven't signed up with the chapter or the Pledge "BECAUSE" they don't collect chips. Believing that slabbing cannot enter their hobby?
After all, if this....
CAN BE SLABBED, THEY WILL ANYTHING!!!
The slabbing companies and slabbers are only after ONE thing....
MORE OF YOUR MONEY!
LET US ALL STAND UNITED IN THE SLAB FREE MOVEMENT
