Hearing your additional facts doesn't change my opinion that you're asking for trouble in using handcuffs in a situation like that. Call the police if you need to, and let them use cuffs or whatever force they require, but having private thugs using cuffs can cause you big problems. Even though this guy's lawyer didn't want to take the case some other guy may be angry enough to sue you anyway.
