I'm not sure I know the answer. One reason may be good PR. Another is to bring people into the casino, in the hopes they'll "pay more than face" for those chips . But if you look at it strictly from a profit motive, if a casino makes 1000 of a chip, they might sell out. If they make 2500 of the exact same chip, they might only sell 500. The 2500 issue doesn't generate any excitement. If I believe they won't sell out, I'm in no hurry to get one, and in the long run I never get around to it. But the 1000 chip issues sell out. I rush to get one, maybe several in speculation.
Now these numbers may be ficticous. But the concept is real. I've seen it in action. The trick is to find the right number - the maximum number that will sell out. It's not easy. We seem to be a fickle crowd . Warwick tried to explain this to us.
We can wish all we want for how we'd like things to be. But if value wasn't a criteria, we'd all be collecting string.
