Clean the platen... No seriously, try a scan with the cover open and see if you see the scanning light. If there is no light, then its time to bury it. If there is, maybe move it to another computer and try it there.

Is it the whole flatbed? Or do parts come out. Can you do a preview of the whole sheet?
