If you loaded a new virus version over an older copy, it can cause problems.

When I bought Mcafee Clinic, they had me take any and all old virus files off my computer. Even sent easy to follow instructions on how to delete hidden files.
Clinic virus scan is done on McAfee web page. $20 per year, daily automatic updates, and I love it.
