But, I do have to agree with Pete on the issue of Social Security. This was perhaps the worst piece of major legislation ever passed in the history of the country. The system has never delivered on its promises, is a huge waste of taxpayer money and ought to be outright scrapped in favor of a system of individualized, private investments. Those who otherwise need government assistance should simply be assisted out of the general fund (which is the functional equivalent of what happens anyway).

Such a change would, of course, now have to be done over an extended period of time.
