I doubt that they "fired" anyone. When the strike is over the "displaced" workers will most likely be placed on a preferential rehire list.
I do not want to start a union/non-union philosophical debate, but union does not = job security. Striking workers are not eligible for unemployment benefits. They can legally be replaced with permanent replacements.
The only thing that is certain with union representation is that you will pay union dues.
