I suppose that some people would use such a feature with malicious intent and result Pete. Those same people already try to use public BB's to disrupt the normal flow of casual discussions and serious exchanges of information.
The example that started my inquiry about being able to edit one's own posts in this thread was, Greg started a post by addressing Paul with a name that wasn't Paul. It was a nickname fairly common to several people that regularly post to this BB, but you wouldn't want to call someone that name if it isn't their name unless you were upset with them.
My own experience with this tool has been, the people who take the time to figure out how to use it do so to correct spelling or add information. If the additional information has been requested by another poster in a reply, most people are smart enough to reply to the reply rather than go back and correct the original post.
I'm involved in season-long contests on the Prodigy BB's concerning auto racing event outcomes. You have to make your picks before the start of the race. Nobody has tried to cheat by editing their picks after the race is over.
