This is a disagreement about terminology, Gene. Till we get a glossary for the hobby, these differences will always arise.
I take my terms from the usage that I believe is standard for currency and coins. It is useful to have different terms for the two classes of chips not made by the casino whose name is on them. I don't think it adds to clarity of thought to use the same term for different things.
Counterfeits (and altered chips) are things that casinos should be concerned about.
Modern (or contemporary) reproductions are of no interest to the casino (which in most cases doesn't exist anymore), but of considerable concern to collectors of old chips.
