The slabbing seminar was worth attending, IMO. I'll give credit to Collector's Universe representative, Stephen Rocci for showing up, though I don't agree with his views about slabbing. As a sportscard specialist, I think he was a "fish out of water" anyway. (Collector's Universe is the parent company of PCGS, the coin grading/slabbing company; plus other divisions involved in sports collectibles and stamp grading/slabbing, etc.)
After the seminar, I asked him how & when Collector's Universe would make a decision whether to slab chips or not (FYI, he told everyone that CU was NOT slabbing chips, but was at the show doing market research.) He said they probably wouldn't make a decision till end of the year at least.
SO...we have a few months to write letters to CU to discourage their entry and explain why we don't want it in the chip hobby. I intend to write a letter to the chairman and also to other board members. CU is a publicly-held company [NASDAQ: CLCT], and while they may ultimately decide to begin slabbing chips, the prospect of spending $100,000 for a custom chip mold, and the prospect of losing money for multiple years may cause them to abandon entry at all.
If you want to write to them, here's names & address:
