There are people who will tell you that your chances are better in a non-gaming jurisdiction because the shop owners are not aware of the values of the chips that they may have.
If the situation in TX is similar to Maryland/West Virginia/Virginia you will find a lot of places have nothing and they look at you funny just for asking. Then there are those that want $30 for a few of the pressed paper/cardboard embossed chips, and those who must think the packages of plastic ridged chips that you can buy in any drug store for $1.99 are gold plated.
I try not to get discouraged and have hit the jackpot on one occasion at a pawn shop in Winchester, VA. It will take many dry runs to make up for that one!!
I would suggest that you go for it. You never know what you are going to find.
