Jill:
I agree with your collecting "style". I also am very picking as to where the inserts are in relation to the inlay, specs of color in the chip material, well centered inlays, blah blah blah. (my wife wants to know why it takes me 2 hours to paint the bathroom, and two weeks to finally decide in what order to display my chip collection, alpha, release date, or by casino).
and as far as this Venetian mold goes, I wouldn't consider either chip an error would you? When I think of error I think of the Mandalay Bay boxing chip that has $100 denomination on one side and $50.00 on the other. That's an error! These are just two mold variations one more limited quantities than the other.
My problem is in identifying the different style and color of chips. Shiny hats, long canes, short canes, OOR, OOR-Color-FG, OR, OR-Color-WG, etc... No-one needs to try and explain this to me, I have the descriptions of each style in the front of TCR, but I still can't figure it out. What I need is a chip of each one in front of me. But even then I question my self, "was it a shiny hat at one time and now it's dirty?"
And color! Don't get me started! Just like your Las Vegas Club Bandit chip everybody has a different idea of what the color is. Somebody had a $1.00 stardust up for sale on ebay, and it was either TCR #N2221 or #N7221. The difference being that one is Pink-Red in color, and the other is Red in color. It sure looked Pink-Red to me, but I e-mailed the seller just to be sure and he replied "Red, can't you see the scan?" I need to see both next to each other to tell them apart.
I think in time as I see more and more chips, hang around this board, and talk to some of the more knowledgeable collectors at the shows, I'll pick up these nuances. I can't wait!
BTW what color is your bandit chip? J.K. We don't need to start that thread again do we? ;-p
