Bill,
Sort of. An ISP is the company that provides you with internet service to your home or business. Many times they will host your website for you. Then, there are companies that do nothing but host websites. These are usually large buldings full of servers with high speed redundant connections to the internet.
One service these companies offer virtual hosting which is usually the least expensive. There might be hundreds of websites all using the same server. That is fine for most sites.
Another service they offer is dedicated hosting. That is where you actually lease a complete server that is sitting in their building. They load it with the operating system and hook it up to their high speed connection to the internet and then it is pretty much yours to do with what you want. It's a lot more expensive, but you don't have to worry about hundreds of other websites slowing down the server. You also have a lot more space. For example, I was WAY over the limit for storage space but on my new server I'm only using 2% of the space.
I also have the ability now to host other websites on my server. I will be moving susong.com, slabfree.com, chipguide.com and ccgtcc.com all to this new server.
