Well, I visited my old coin club last night and conducted a survey among those who volunteered to participate.
The question was; "What does the term "obsolete" mean to you when applied to U.S. coins?"
I then listed 16 type-coins such as Large Cents, Indian Head Cents, Steel Cents, Two Cent Pieces, Three Cent Pieces, "V" Nickels, Buffalo Nickels, Barber Dimes, Standing Liberty Quarters, Walking Liberty Half Dollars, Pre-1964 Kennedy Half Dollars, 40% Clad Kennedy Half Dollars, Silver Dollars, Ike Dollars, S.B.A. Dollars, Sacagawea Dollars, U.S. Gold.
Interestingly the various responses mirrored the responses posted to this BB regarding obsolete casino chips. No real agreement on any of them. The closest to unity was the Sacagawea Dollar where 2 coin club members said "Yes" (obsolete) while 10 coin club members said "NO". Most other examples were pretty well closely split 6 to 5 or 5 to 6. Indian Head Cents and Buffalo Nickels for example had 5 "Yes" responses and 5 "No" responses, while Large Cents received 8 "Yes" and 3 "No". So it would appear that there is no general consensus in coin collecting either as to what is "obsolete". Just thought I would share this information with y'all for whatever it is worth.
