The Spotted Calf was at 5th and York.
The owners name was "Butters". He was a player in Newport scene for many years. Fencing and most other things. The Spotted Calf was mostly a "Girly" joint over the years. There was no gambling at the Spotted Calf, except pin ball machines, punchboards, etc.
I called "Butters" a friend for many years. In the 1970's I owned The Mustang, a girly joint at 6th & Monmouth. Yes, the same building that Larry Trapp now has his store.
Good story: The girly joints always had bouncers. Butters had a bouncer named Curly, 6"tall and 220lbs. I had a bouncer named Charlie, 5"4 and 150Lbs. Curly & Charlie got into a disagreement at another girly joint one night. Charlie beat the crap out of the bigger Curly. After Curly got out of the hospital he walked into the Mustang and shot Charlie. Charlie survived, found Curly and beat the crap out of him, again.
Butters and I remained friends.
Curly was shot and killed in later years.
I read in the KY papers last year, that Charlie was in the care of the FBI for robbing banks.
