The issue of slabbing I think is way out of control.
In the 'business' of baseball collecting, ONLY the highest quality, mint, unhandled cards get graded. I have an old Willy Mays card that is nice but has some flaws and I'm certainly not going to pay to have it rated. It would probably be listed as Good and worth about $10-$15. If I had it graded it would still be worth about the same so why bother.
And as for chips, it would be ridiculous to have an obviously used chip graded, as it would be and is for baseball cards.
I get the impression that you collectors and hobbyists feel that ALL chips will go the way of slabbing, which is certainly not the case. Slabbing may be a way of a 'certificate of authenticity' for the mint and the older uncirculated chips. Certainly NOT for all chips and certainly not for all the new LE's that come out almost daily.
If I had an old, mint, uncirculated 50-60 year old casino chip and it cost me $15 to have it slabbed (or authenticated) I may just do it and sell it on Ebay. But I don't so that's a mute point.
And, really, I don't care one way or the other.
