Re: "Obsolete" comparison BTW...

My coin comparison was merely an attempt to provide an "exaggerated example" to "make a point", not an attempt to be argumentive or "right" - nor did I want to apply the "exceptions" or catalysts that could obviously affect a clear determination.

It was the first thing I could think of that most people "could relate to", "visualize to some degree", and have "some common knowledge" - yet could also be loosely applied in a general way to chips. (casino - bank... just an attempt to provide a "clearer analogy" without exceptions (Paul's CA. statement sure cuts through any "cut-n-dry" determination anyway!), exclusions, or external considerations.

I HONESTLY am NOT just being argumentive... this is something that has bothered me since I began collecting in public forums as the word indicates a specific "status" and often "encourages" a belief and/or illusion of "increased value" (which is ironic in itself), "rarity" and "inability to procure in a manner other than is being presented." THIS IS AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT TANGENT of this ISSUE (sort of) but one that is the most disturbing TO ME and is one that is used dishonestly by some sellers. Others simply use the term as "interpreted" (by themselves and others/ peers) but with no malice or deceit intended.

But this is a WHOLE DIFFERENT CAN OF WORMS...

AND - let's look at the above definition and apply IT:

"I think a lot of coin collectors would disagree with you Jill.... as well as Mr. Webster who says; "Obsolete: 1. No longer in use. "

Ok - does that means EVERY CHIP I HAVE HERE IN ARIZONA is obsolete because they are "no longer in use". After all - they have been removed from the establishments and are no "in use" as gaming devices. OF COURSE NOT!

AND THIS IS EXACTLY how and why the "definition" has been distorted and adapted based on PARTICULARS instead of the "constants" that dictate the "status of being obsolete" in the first place.

Personally, I "think of" certain chips (and call them - privately of course until now) as "true obsoletes". Everything else is "whatever it is called" or "however it is described". I understand and accept that.

But it was the "confederate money" that provided the quickest clearest analogy I could think of... that is why I used it and coins. (without external complications)

???? ????? Does that make sense???? ????? (I hope a little?)
