Archie, et. al.,
I suggest that we dump the term obsolete and leave it for the uninitiated and uninformed eBay'ers, so we can all recognize them right away.
But in all seriousness, the term obviously has so many different meanings for so many different people, I think you will be hard pressed to re-define the term.
Instead, we (with your leadership/authorship) should look to establishing a dictionary or table of terms that are in fact specifically applicable to the various situations/concepts. Even if a situation/concept is described in words and then truncated with an acronym. For example, many of us now use "UFC" to designate a chip or check as being unidentified. HS means Hot Stamped, and etc.
Where an existing word appropriately meets the vast majority's definition of the concept, then use the word. I. E., "mold" or "inlay". Where an existing word or different words can mean the same thing or different things, then create a word or expression, or acronym for that specific meaning. The words "side" and "edge" come to mind. Are they the same, are they different? The area of a chip that is not the front/back or obverse/reverse, sometimes called the side, or edge or third side, could be called (pick something).
It seems to me that we should name or label the concept, not apply a concept to a name. This should not be too difficult as we are already use to the idea. Again, I point out UFC, and also CIC, BJ, and so many, many other things.
This, of course, is IMHO.
