Sniping would produce no benefit to a bidder if everybody understood the proxy bidding system and acted rationally. In that case each person would bid their maximum and in fact it would be beneficial to bid early because bewteen two equal bids the earlier one wins.

However because it appears that huge numbers of bidders don't understand the proxy bidding system or act irrationally there is substantial benefit from sniping.
