"Slabbing will be the death of us."
I don't know if this is true. I don't have a crystal ball. So much has been written about this process that it actually makes one sick to think you have to read this. I hope I don't make you sick but I do want to make just a few short points.
Slabbing may not be the death of us but it will take the "fun" out of the hobby. Just ask coin collectors. It will turn a hobby into an investment quicker then you can take a breath! Since this slabbing thing started I wondered how a group of five people, I help elect, who ran on a platform of "fun" allowed this to happen. It's easy if you think about it. They believe investment can be a large element of our hobby. I just don't happen to agree. I believe investment will take the "fun" out of the hobby. That's where this issue is at folks!
You see slabbing is a process of encasing a collectable in a plastic tomb. We should never lose sight of the fact IT IS A PROCESS. Stopping a process which is not acceptable within our hobby is not depriving a collector of collecting anything.
I enjoy reading posts by individuals who are against a ban of slabbed chips. They lose sight of the discussion and zero in on the chip instead of the process. Hey folks, the chip is innocent. It's the process we are against and wish to stop within our hobby.
We do not allow non casino items to be sold at our convention. This includes coins. I do not hear cries of discrimination against this so called ban against coins. I don't read any objections to this so called ban against non casino items including coins. Why all the fuss about "slabbed" chips? I will tell you why people. It has to do with money. You see if we ban slapped chips from being sold at our convention; we ban the opportunity for our hobby to grow into an investment. Coins are already an investment. Hence, no objection to their "ban". Those who sell chips for big bucks don't like eliminating this investment possibility. You see our hobby of collecting chips has not reached the level of an investment hobby. It still retains the innocence of "fun". There are those who would rather see our hobby grow along investment lines. However, this type of growth is what many of us are fighting.
I don't want slabbing companies at our convention. I don't want these companies to gain credibility under the guise of education. Yes, I am against the "slabbing" seminar. Nothing against Jim Reilly but he lost the election. He doesn't speak for me as an elected officer. He is just a collector like you or me. Why isn't one of our elected officers representing us??? I refuse to give any recognition to a slabbing company in any form.
The "process" should be not allowed at our convention for any collectable. To do so is a sell out. However, what's new? We have been sold out before. Don't fall for this bunk about rights and fairness. Slabbing does not belong in our hobby. If we allow it. It will destroy the "fun" you now enjoy. There are many other excellent seminars put on by Michael Knapp. There is no need to attend one on slabbing. You already know more about our hobby than they do. What are you willing to compromise - some of your "fun"? Forget it!!!!
