I see nothing wrong with a seller putting a reserve on his items. I make my top bid and if it isn't good enough I haven't lost anything. On a number of occasions where I have been top bidder but under the reserve, the seller has contacted me offering the chip at the reserve or less (yes I know that violates eBay's rules but I am not terribly happy with their rules either).
