I don't recall hearing any reports about someone purchasing two racks either... but that does not necessarily mean that it didn't happen ... nor would it be unusual if it did happen.
I still believe that with the tremendous amount of people in town the day before the show opened .... and the Wednesday night trade session and Early Bird Welcome ... and alot of the dealers who set up their tables on Wednesday.... had a lot to do with the early disbursement of $5 convention LE chips. After all, if a new chip is issued during a chip convention, lots of the dealers in attendance would want to put a small quantity in their inventories for sale.... not just for when the show was in progress, but for private commercial shows later on during the year or for their mail-order customer business.
Just think; with 100 dealer tables at the '98 convention, many of which are shared with other dealers, if every dealer purchased only ten chips each (or less) it would have wiped out the whole 1000 chips available. I do know that the chips were on sale during the day on Wednesday and were being sold at the cage during and after the Early Bird Reception on Wednesday night. Evidently, this didn't help those chippers who arrived in town for the opening day of the convention on Thursday.... many of whom waited too long before approaching the cage to make their chip purchase thinking that they would be available throughout the duration of the show.
I really don't know at what point in time all 1000 chips were sold out, but certainly the entire LE $5 convention chip issue was not bought up by one or two ... or three or four "greedy" dealers! Lots of collectors purchased multiple pieces as well.
