There is a part of the collector mentality that wants to differentiate, perhaps even in pursuit of "perfection". The TY tags are just a differentiation point. With Barbie Dolls, and other toy collectibles, the box is as important, or more important than the item itself, with "mint in box" being the sought after condition. I'm not a coin collector, but it seems that the preoccupation with grading is to differentiate for that one coin per year that fits a hole in one's collection, the other difference being mint mark. If you collect, say, quarters, after you get each mint mark for each year that you're after, then the only way to keep up the pursuit is to upgrade the condition. The fact that there are LOTS of different chips out there makes condition differences less of a factor in chipping than in other hobbies, IMO. Condition still matters in chipping, just not as much as the slab companies would like it to.
