I have been looking through my collection recently and came across a very interesting chip, that might be my favorite. The chip is a $25 Harrah's silver core. When I first heard of this chip, I thought that the people who had seen it were crazy, but after some investigation, I heard the following story, and I believe that it is very real.
I had called a freind who had worked for Harrah's in the 1950's - 1970's as an executive. I asked if he had any old casino chips that he had kept. He mentioned that he had developed the brass core chip at the request of Bill Harrah in the early 1970's. bill was very involved in the project, as he wanted a cost effective chip that would not wear easily. The came up with the concept of the brass core chip. After they ran their first prototypes, they cast 3 groups of 3 silver core $25 chips and covered them with the black plastic to commemorate the event. They also made a single platinum core $25 chip for Bill Harrah. The 9 silver cores were distributed to the executives of Harrah's such as Rome Andreoti. I found this story interesting as I had turned up a silver core and not mentioned it to this person before I heard this story. He also mentioned that he had kept ne of them as a souvenier. Several months later, I saw his silver core, and it matched mine. I believe that these are the only 2 survivors.
Please post any interesting stories behind your chips, as I am sure many readers find them very interesting.
