The outside rings on the $10 Silver Strikes never were gold plated, just a highly polished brass. Currently, all new orders for the "G" mints are coming with an outside ring composition with more copper in it, thereby, the more reddish color. This is supposed to be a temporary situation and the mint says it will in the future go back to the original material.
