... it was my idea (well, it was my variation on an idea initially proposed by Jim Episale).
But, I disagree entirely with this conclusion:
>> This is essentially prohibiting the collecting of these items if you
>> want to stay a club member, as these venues are the principal way many
>> members add to their collections.
Obviously, I acknowledge that these venues are a major source of material for many collectors, but there are many others available. In any event, a rule prohibiting the use of club venues for the sale or promotion of slabbed chips would NOT "prohibit members from collecting whatever they want". There are many comparable rules in society generally: we restrict the sale of alcohol and tobacco to specified locations and prohibit it elsewhere. This doesn't mean people are being prohibited from drinking or smoking. Gas stations, drive-through restaurants, porno shops (especially porno shops! <g>) and many other kinds of businesses are prohibited from selling in specified locations or venues -- this does not amount to preventing anyone from buying these products.
>> Not a false issue at all, but to me, the key issue of all this controversy.
>> No question the club has the right to do so; it would be foolish and
>> destructive to exercise that right, however.
By "false issue", I mean that it is incorrect to say that I (or anyone else) has proposed that members be prohibited from collecting slabbed chips. As I have said elsewhere, I doubt that the club has the authority (legal) or the right (moral) to impose such a prohibition. But it does, as you concede, have the right to control the use of its own venues. And (obviously), I disagree with your conclusion that it would be foolish or destructive to exercise that right.
In my opinion, this is the most serious threat to the hobby as we know that we have ever faced. I believe that we must fight it in every possible way. There is no more effective means available to us than to deny slabbers the use of our club venues. If elected, I will propose a resolution prohibiting the use of club venues for the sale or promotion of slabbed chips.
NOT IN MY HOBBY. NOT ON MY WATCH. NOT WITHOUT A FIGHT.
Nothing personal against you, Don. In keeping with Travis' anti-slabbing pledge <g>, I respect your right to have and express an opinion that differs from mine.
