I’ve felt that I should stay out of the mainstream slabbing debate, primarily because I had nothing to add that hasn’t been said by many whom are more knowledgeable than I. On both sides. It seems, though, that some just don’t GET it. I’ve seen some compelling arguments relating to the proscription of sales and advertising of slabbed materials during club events and in club periodicals, and I've seen some attempts even to defend slabbing, but this is something else...
>>> ... DIVERSITY. It is what makes life interesting.
Absolutely, Dave. Just ask those coin collectors who have been priced out of their hobby because it has been DIVERSIFIED into an investment activity.
>>> No one is going to slab your average every day chip.
...just like no one is slabbing your average every day coin, right? WRONG! Time to buy a clue, Dave. It’s NOT just going to be the other guys’ chip buying habits that are going to be affect... it will be yours as well.
>>...Come on, guy, these are just little pieces of clay.
Now, I don’t know how closely or even if you’ve been reading the “slabbing issue” threads, but I’m kind of surprised you haven’t noticed the enthusiasm with which most of the participants are writing. Your entire post conveys a dispassionate attitude toward chip collecting. If you view your chip collection as merely “little pieces of clay”, then I can only suggest you find a new hobby.
>>> The Chip Slabbing Issue? Hey, if it's your chip you can slab it, wear it on a chain around your neck, nail it to your roof, whatever... it's your chip & your business. What is OUR business is an unwarranted attack on a fellow chipper who's opinion differs from ours.
The central theme of the “slabbing issue” is the eliminating the demand for slabbed chips, Dave. Reading through this thread, I have not found an “unwarranted attack on a fellow chipper who’s (sic) opinion differs from ours.” If you have read the LIST, and more to the point, the PLEDGE, you would see that there are simply fellow chippers who have followed through on their promise not to participate in the demand for slabbed chips... and nothing more. This seller was clearly aware of the list and what the consequences of selling slabbed chips would be (ie: he would have 200+ less customers) and clearly made a deliberate decision to continue in the sales of these chips.
No one’s picking on him!
