Jim,
At one time that was the case. However, as far as I know now, whatever is formatted for a PC, the MAC will have accessibility to the basic files. For example, if you stick a PC CD with an encyclopedia on it into a MAC, you cannot use the executable Program, but you can access the text files, the images, the WAVs, etc. The problem encountered is that most of those files are named with a number, therefore, you have to open each one to know what it is. Also, you need an application program (or two) that can open each type of file. However, Programs like CanOpener or Conversions Plus, have the ability to open almost any file regardless of the suffix designation (i.e., .jpg, .doc, .txt, .wav, etc.).
I figured (and maybe incorrectly) that the HCE files that are on the CD are a bunch of scanned images, or text files or both. Do you know if this is the case? Perhaps the files are from a database program, but even so, using the import command in Excel or FileMaker or SQL will still import the raw data, which then gets manually assigned to columns.
Regards,
Jim F.
