Re: NEW YEAR'S EVE IN NEW YORK
In Response To: NEW YEAR'S EVE IN NEW YORK ()

The weirdest laws on the books are related to the sale of alcohol. New York State has Sunday "Blue Laws" which restrict the sale of liquor on Sundays. It is one of the last remnants of the prohibition. But just about every state has similar laws.

In some states, the state owns the exclusive right to sell alcohol. When I was in Salt Lake City skiing many years ago, Utah had that law. When I tried to order Kahlua, I was told that the state forgot to order it and there was none to be had in the entire state of Utah. In order to serve liquor in a bar, it had to be a private club. So you had to sign up as a member in order to get into a bar that served liquor. And they would sell you the liquor in one of the one oz. airline liquor bottles along with your mixer. If you wanted wine at dinner, the state had a little wine shop set up outside a restaurant and you had to leave the restaurant to buy the wine and bring to your waiter who would then charge a "corkage fee" for serving you your own wine.

In NY state you can buy beer in a supermarket, but not wine. In other states, all liquor including beer and wine are only sold in liquor stores.

Anyone who wants liquor on New Year's Eve in New York State will be able to find what they want.
