"Rare" chip question

Please excuse this newby's igorance but just how does anyone know how many chips from any particular casino are known to exist? I realize that records are available from some establishments which will indicate the numbers of a certain chip ordered, but who knows how many people have them. I expect that many people other than those that belong to our club have chips stored away from many years ago (or possibly inherited) that we don't know about.

The most recent example of this are the now famous Thunderbird Chips which found new light at our last convention. Even I found some Atlantic City Playboy chips socked away in a drawer during my recent move. They. of course, are not rare, but I could have just as well found some other chips from closed casino's which might have ruined the market.

I rather expect that there are many people who save casino chips that never heard of us and it is very likely that some of those same people might have multiples of chips stored away which, when surfaced, will devaluate some of the current "rare" chips.

This whole question was brought about due to the new Ebay auction of the $0.25¢ Treasure Bay chip in which there is a question as to known number of those chips available---are there 9 or are there 10. It is really possible to pin it down to such a close number as that?
