Stef; You've explained the problem exactly! A few of the 25 total fight chips are assigned higher UNCIRCULATED GRADES than the rest.... and put into slabs.
In the coin grading system, MINT STATE grades (which is what MS stands for) there are grades MS60, MS61, MS62, MS63, MS64, MS65, MS66, MS67, MS68, MS69, MS70. Anything below MS60 is not considered "mint state", but are basal states. There are NO MS grades below 60... but ten different grades to distinguish Uncirculated coins! This is true! Apply that logic to grading chips! I defy even the very knowledgeable Mr. Taylor to do that.
AU stands for About Uncirculated. AU grades run from AU50 up through AU59. Next is XF for Extra Fine. Those grades are XF40 to XF45. The next grade range below that is VF, or Very Fine. Those grades are designated from VF20 ro 25 through VF35. Next grade is Fine, from F12 to F15. Then we have Good, or G ... which is really an oxymoron as G is a well worn coin that most collectors wouldn't even want in their collection, unless it was rare. Below that is AG, for About Good, which is corroded, bent, holed, worn so bad that one can hardly see any detail at all....
I see I'm going to have a long friendly Mano to Mano talk with you before the A.C. Chapter meeting Jim.... but I think maybe by January 7th, you may be thinking differently (I hope so) <vbg> Later; good friend.
