Andy,
I will not deny that the potential is their for myself or others to profit from slabbing. I do not anticipate slabbing anything, chips, coins, etc., but I do not like the idea of any group eliminating the possibility. If 2,500 is the number of members, then that is fair. I really stand by the 50 number. Remember, they are people who paid cash, not trade for a chip. If you don't like paying for a slabbed chip, then buy chips that have not been slabbed. There will still be many chips left off of the slab, especially current and limited edition chips. People can still buy these off of the tables and collect them. This still happens with coins.
I also cannot see that when only one chip is available in a condition, i.e. $5 Golden Goose (very nice condition), $5 Wilber Clark's DI Arodie (really bad condition), how slabbing will change their values. These chips will rise in value based on demand, as supply is extremely limited. People will offer their owners more thn current value in an attempt to buy the chips. This is happening currently. Most of the really premium chips are available in very small quantities, unlike proof or similar coins.
Please don't knock the profit motive too badly. I have built a complete brass core collection from Nevada up to the $100, with several unique prototypes that are in no other collections. At this point in time, there is no where else to go, and just hanging on to them is not as satifying as finding more to buy. So, I am truly considering parting with these premium chips. I should not be chastised for wanting to make a good return. I buy lots of chips continually, and when I decide to part with them, artificial barriers should not be put in place by others on the club to limit my price. The price should be simply a function of a willing buyer and a willing seller getting together and agreeing on the price. I have never run into a life threatening situation where the other party was in danger if they didn't buy a chip.
I hope others that agree with having the club stay out of this one speak up.
