Just put the ashtray (or any other object) on the glass. If you cover the object with a white sheet, you'll get a white background. If you leave the cover open, you'll get a black background. The light from the scan-bar is so much brighter than the room lighting there's no need to darken the room to make the scanner-CCD see black.
