I think there's a little more to it. Priority is sorted separately and quicker when it reaches your local general mail facility, and is more likely to be on a truck to the airplane before first class. That alone could make a difference of a day before the item gets to the airplane where you might encounter yet another delay if the loading process leaves some first class mail to wait for the next plane.
