for a couple of reasons.

1) The winner Brian's auction after the retraction is someone we've seen post here. I'm not sure if is he is a club member but most people around here seem to be. But I see no reason to doubt his honesty.

2) The retractor went on to win another auction for the same item. This suggests that the retractor was trying to win an auction for himself and wasn't just bid shielding.
