Modern ivories at gun shows & TRUE STORY

I've seen them on display at gun shows for about $50
to $100 each. I think many are machined (what they
call etched, but not really). Some look pretty
good, too.

An ivory poker chip doesn't really have to be very
old to have value.

In fact, in the Recent Creations & Suspected Fakes
section of "Antique Gambling Chips" - Revised
Edition, you'll see about 150 examples. One piece:
IZ-QV "Texas Belle" - was listed in Howdy's Auction
No.5, 1993, and the buyer paid $871 for it.

In the Commemoratives & Place Names section of
Dale's work (better chips), you'll see IR-GV "Texas
Belle" (my baby) - a work of art sold to a sailor in
New Orleans after WWII. He paid $5 for it at the
time. I was offered $2000 for it a few years ago.

The story goes that the sailor (and his friend) were
to meet two girls from San Antonio. They bought the
mounted chips in a shop for $5 each.... and they
were stood up; the girls never showed. The
gentleman I bought mine from lost track of his
friend after they both went off in their separate
directions.
