Maybe they made the C's different to prevent "ringing in" chips, or at least to uphold their advertising promises about "registered monograms," "non-duplicate checks." "protected chips," "exclusively yours," etc. Just like ivory poker chips had little changes and do dads for each new customer's order, the USPC probably changed the style of the "C",some, for new customers who ordered a "CC" chip.
