I just check a couple of auctions that I lost out on. If I wasn't the second high bidder, 3 recent auctions would have ended at prices lower by $29, $16, and $39. In effect I made the sellers an extra $85 by my bidding.

I wonder how much money I've cost a certain dealer whose auctions I've not bid on for almost 10 months? Now factor in others who have stopped bidding on this certain dealer's auctions.

I think honesty is the best fiscal policy, if you need a reason to be honest.
