Leaving instructions to hire a professional online auctioneer to liquidate the collection, over a fairly long time frame rather than as a single event, would probably result in the greatest net to one's estate.
Getting some expert chippers to provide appraisals, and then donating the entire collection to a museum would keep the collection intact, and could well have great tax advantages.
Passing the entire collection along to an interested family member might have adverse tax ramifications, but would be a fantastic legacy.
Doing no advance planning, and letting a dealer like me find your collection at a garage sale, local estate sale/auction, or in a classified ad, would probably be a disaster for your estate. Not that I don't pay fair value for collections, but I try to pay about 40% - 50% of what I feel the chips will retail for.
Take your pick. My wife knows to continue to sell on eBay as I have if she's up to it, and she has a list of trusted sellers to contact to liquidate my inventory if she's not up to doing it herself.
My personal collection, which is merely a single chip of each design, clay, ivory, MOP, etc., goes to my eldest son, or eldest grandson.
