I too have networked the 800 MHz Dell with the 200 MHz Dell. I've also shared the hard drives and printers between the two machines as well as using Internet Sharing (yes, Windows 98 SE), and my wife thinks that it was the best thing I have done with the computers! I have also purchased an ISA NIC and plan to put it in the old 486 SX machine (I've upgraded it to 64 MBytes and a 100 MHz Pentium), yet haven't had time...
Also your point about spare slots is a great one! If Alan is planning on moving over anything from his old machine, he needs to make sure that the cards and slots are compatible (ISA Vs PCI - i.e. older Vs newer) Some machines have a mix of these slots, yet more and more of the newer machines are goig with just PCI slots.
