I don't like scamming bidders any more than I like scamming sellers -- I'm not exactly sure what your buyer is/was up to, but the deal stinks.
Peter raises a good point about the return policy in the club's Code of Ethics (though a reasonable argument could be made that your description implies an "as is" policy).
My gut tells me you should use a (vulgar) variation of your state's motto in response to this guy, but I guess I wouldn't do it if it were I in your situation. On the other hand, I don't think you should take a loss on the deal because he's an idiot. I would certainly reduce the refund by your out of pocket expenses.
As for negative feedback, I wouldn't give a damn about that. As I've said before, way overrated anyway and I absolutely agree with Michael's advice on that issue.
