UFC ID's confirmed!!

A few weeks ago Gene posted some new ID's on chips from Chatanooga, TN. They were the CC with Indian and NHD Hub mold chips. Since I live only 2 hours from Chatanooga I have been waiting for an opportunity to research these ID's. Well on Wednesday my secretary was dumb enough to tell me about the worlds largest yard sale which started today. This yard sale starts (strangely enough) in Newport, KY and follows Hwy 127 South thru Tennessee to the Georgia border (which is where Chatanoogs is at). I decided to play hookey today and started in Crossville, TN which is about 100 miles North of Chatanooga. Never saw so much junk in my life! There must have been 4000-5000 dealers in just the section I saw. Unfortunately all I found was one ashtray and some dice. The temperature hit 105 in Chatanooga today and it was too hot to make every stop. But on the the real story.

I staggered into the Chatanooga library around 4:00 PM and found the reference section. Using the old phone books I was able to determine the following:

CC/Indian Head chip - J.D. Day is John D. Day and he was the manager of the Cherokee Club at 5022 1/2 Roseville Rd. in Chatanooga. This property is one building away from the Georgia border and Mr. Day lived in La Fayette, GA which is 25 miles away from the club. That was a long distance in 1935. The fact that the club was just over the border seems to indicate that either gambling was left alone in Tennessee or that he had a run in with the Georgia police at one time.

NHD - Nolan H. Dunn lived at 707 Georgia Av., Apt. 28 in Chatanooga (1936) and according to Social Security he died in 1984. This doesn't jive with the address where the chips were shipped to originally. However, located at 415 1/2 Market St. was The Riverside Social Club! Apparently Mr. Dunn ran the Social Club and ordered the chips with his initials.

Another Chatanooga club was the Brown Derby and the Brown Derby Lounge at 331 E. 9th St. This was a black bar with a night club upstairs that was raided in 1944. The newspaper story even mentions chips, chip holders for a craps layout, craps tables and dice stamped "Brown Derby Lounge".

I hope you like the information. I am working on getting information on a Wisconsin chip also and I hope to be able to do a few more of the Tennessee chips next time I travel to the west end of the state.
