I don't even dampen the cloth anymore, I just slip a chip directly into the bucket edgewise, spin it a few times to coat it, wait about 45 seconds, yank it, wipe it off, and then rub hard on any tough spots. Amazing.

If I leave it in for more than 45 seconds (on antique clay chips), moisture transfer can occur. The newer casino chips with a higher "plastic" content and a harder surface will probably be fine if you leave it in for 2 minutes.
