I used to frequent the Horseshoe downtown for their $2 single-deck BJ games when I was starting out as a player in my 20's. As a former Texan, I knew all about the Horseshoe and liked its ambience. I had quite a few meals in the downstairs coffee shop (burgers, chili or their midnight steak special mostly), and many times would see Benny and/or Jack at the first booth where they were seated.
One time at the BJ tables, a well-dressed woman and her daughter (or friend) were playing with green & black chips, while I was betting $2-$3. A very friendly game though, as they had plently of gold jewelry & diamonds, and they weren't concerned about the ups & downs of the game. Hearing a Texas accent, I learned they were from Houston (I grew up in Dallas). She proceded to explain that when the came to town they "stayed with Steve" [Wynn, at the Golden Nugget] but "always played at Benny's because he always gave us a good gamble." Believe me, these ladies could have been comped at any hotel on the strip, but they had a loyalty to the Horseshoe.... It was like that only a few years ago.
