Don (or others) -- concerning dovetail chips...
I've assumed that the manufacturing of dovetails consists of (1) taking 2 colors of circular blanks (say red & yellow); (2)die-cutting the dovetail through both colors of chips & separating the 2 pieces; (3) reassembling 1 red & 1 yellow piece to make a whole chip; (4)compressing & molding the final chip, ready for hot-stamping or center-inlay. The result would be prox. equal numbers of final chips with a dark dovetail vs. light dovetail, less any ruuined in the molding or stamping process.
Do you know of examples where ONLY one color of the dovetail appears, or does it seem that both colors appear in about the same frequency?
