Just a piece of scanning trivia that might save some time.

If you want a white background on your scanned items, close the lid before you scan.

If you want a black background, leave the lid open! As long as you don't lean over the machine while it's scanning, the sensor sees the void of outer space and gives you a uniform black around the items.
